FeatherFlix Bird Video of the Week: Bohemian Waxwing

FeatherFlix just added an exciting bird - - Bohemian Waxwing, an elegant fairy of the boreal forests. It drops into the northern tier of U.S. states in winter, wandering unpredictably in bands of a dozen or two, but in the Western Hemisphere Bohemian Waxwing is mostly a Canadian citizen. Its range stretches to the British Isles, northern Europe, and across Asia into Japan. In the lower 48 states we are much more familiar with the closely related Cedar Waxwing, compared with Bohemian conservatively marked and less cosmopolitan in range.

We owe our profile of this mythical being to Evelien de Greef, a hard-working conservation biologist (and accomplished wildlife photographer!) in Winnipeg, doing important wildlife research with genomics. She studied Purple Martins and their migration patterns during her graduate program and is currently working on investigating population genomics in marine mammals. Evelien encountered the Waxwings occasionally this (2022) winter and we thank her frosty fingers for this intimate visit with a cohort picking frozen berries. Her capture of the Bohemians’ contact chatter is especially valuable; watching her video prepares us for our own encounter when the chance comes our way. She promises to identify the Waxwings’ tree for us when the leaves come out. For the future, Evelien sees using “… research tools to protect biodiversity, and genomics is one way to help understand populations and guide conservation efforts.”

In winter, Bohemian Waxwing is an eater of berries, small fruits gathered from arboreal vines and the trees that hold them up - - cherries, crab apple, mountain ash, hollies. Persistent fruits are essential in sustaining them through winter, so our best chance of seeing Bohemian Waxwing is to keep an eye on trees with dangling berries. The buzzy chatter of feeding groups we hear in Evelien’s video could give us a heads up.
