Sabicas (Agustín Castellón Campos) is one of the greatest masters of flamenco guitar, nephew of Ramon Montoya. Born in 1912 in the city of Pamplona (Navarra, Spain), died in New York (USA) on April 14, 1990. In the music world, Sabikas became a legend during his lifetime. He began playing the guitar very early, immediately demonstrating extraordinary musical abilities. He acquired the nickname “Sabicas” as a child due to his passion for raw beans (“habas”, or, as he called them as a child, “habicas”), hence the name “bean boy” (el Nino de las Habicas, and later just Nino Sabicas). He spent his early years in Pamplona, and then the family moved to Madrid, where Sabicas made his debut as a flamenco guitarist. In the 20s and 30s he accompanied many of the leading flamenco singers and dancers of the time, gaining fame as a first-class accompanist. In 1936, when civil war broke out in Spain, Sabicas left his homeland and went to South America. In 1937, he met the famous flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya in Buenos Aires, with whom he performed until 1950. For many years he lived in Mexico City, and in 1955 he moved to New York (USA), where he performed mainly as a lead guitarist. In 1967, Sabicas returned to Spain, but more formally, since most of the time he continued to live in America. In his homeland - Spain - his art remained almost unknown for quite a long time (at least to the post-war generation of flamenco guitarists), and was fully appreciated only thanks to the recordings that came from America and the amazing impression it made on Spanish guitarists who visited overseas . Paco de Lucia, in particular, later admitted that before Sabicas, the only and indisputable authority of flamenco for him was Niño Ricardo, whose school and style he studied, and only after hearing Sabicas did he “realize that there is something more in the guitar” and “opened up for himself with a previously unheard-of purity of sound, a hitherto unknown tempo, and a definitely different manner of performance,” which prompted him to add Sabikas’ style to his guitar sound in order to “transform it and make it his own...”. It can be said without exaggeration that it was thanks to Sabicas that the guitar and flamenco music became known and loved throughout the world. Before him, the flamenco guitar was rarely heard outside of Spain, but Sabicas' numerous tours and recordings made it one of the most popular instruments.
