At first it was called Prey Nokor and was the largest port of Cambodia after the Angkor period. After the conquest of this area by the Vietnamese in 1698 and until 1975, it was called Saigon (Vietnamese Sài Gòn, ty-nom 西貢, after the name of the river on which it is located). Renamed in honor of the first president of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh (according to the rules of transliteration, Vietnamese geographical names are written together). At the same time, in colloquial Vietnamese, the name "Saigon" is still common.
