Adenomyosis is a condition that causes heavy bleeding, bloating, pain, and fertility issues. It is difficult to treat without performing a hysterectomy because, unlike fibroids, there is no distinct tumor or mass that can be removed. The endometrial glands invade the muscle of the uterus, and, unfortunately, blood begins to accumulate in the muscle, causing great pain and discomfort.
Adenomyosis is difficult to detect on ultrasound. The diagnosis is typically made when the uterus is enlarged and a distinct fibroid can not be identified.
