Check out this video gives for my top 5 ESL spelling games and activities. Teaching spelling for English learners is key to helping with successful writing and of course, it helps students remember new vocabulary words and never forget them!
Here's another benefit to teaching English spelling. I’m ALL about activities that require basically nothing in the way of materials or preparation time. This is the case with most TEFL spelling games. It’s ideal to have at least a few of them in your back pocket to pull out in case of emergency, namely a last-minute class thrown at you a few minutes before it starts.

Today I'm going to share with you my top five ESL spelling games.
The first one is a whiteboard race ([ Ссылка ]&). Divide students into three or four teams and then have them line up in lines at the whiteboard and the first student from each team would grab a marker. And then what you do can kind of depend on the level. For beginners, you could just say a word yellow and those students could race to be the first one to spell yellow. If they do that, they get one point for their team and then they go to the back of the line. And then the next students come and will spell a different word. For slightly higher-level students, you could give some hints. So for example, it's the colour of water and students might say blue. They could spell blue.
My second one is chain spelling. This is kind of a friendly competitive game for spelling. All the students can stand up out of their desks and then get them to line up, kind of in a circle and then you can say a word and students will have to spell it letter by letter. For example, yellow. The first student would say y e l l o w and if the students say the letter correctly, they stay in the game. If they miss a letter, they have to sit down and are out of the game. And I will generally give students three seconds also. I'll count on my fingers three, two, one and if they don't say it within that time they also have to sit down. Continue until the last person is standing or the last couple of people are standing.
The next spelling game is Boggle. So it's easy if you have a very small group. Just get the actual Boggle game. Or you can draw a grid on the board and then play some Boggle. I generally say that students have to come up with words that are four letters or more.
The next one is to have a spelling bee. So I'm sure you've seen this before or even done it yourself. But, have a spelling bee with your students. I generally give them a word list of possible words that are on the spelling bee and then we'll take a whole class and yeah, just spell out some of the words. Start with the easy ones and get into the more difficult ones later.
The final spelling game is the letter auction. I will do this as a word auction but if you want to focus on spelling, do it as a letter auction. So for example, maybe you were doing months of the year. Have all the letters that spell the months of the year, cut them up into little squares and then put students into teams and then give them a certain amount of money. And they have to make bids on the letters that they think will help them spell the months of the year.
After all the money is gone and they have all the letters, there's a trading time. Teams can trade with other teams for whatever letters they need and finally, they can make the words that spell months of the year. Whoever has the most months of the year is the winner. So that's quite a simple game you can play. It does take a bit of prep but it's really fun and students really enjoy it.
Those are all my ESL spelling activities. Please leave a comment and tell me how you help students with spelling.
