The Dassault Mirage 4000, also known as the Super Mirage 4000, is a French fighter aircraft prototype developed by Dassault-Breguet. It is a twinjet aircraft that was created based on the Mirage 2000.
Compared to the Mirage 2000, the Mirage 4000 is larger and heavier, with two SNECMA M53-2 turbofans. It also has small canards above the engine air intakes and a bubble canopy, unlike the Mirage 2000. However, both planes share the delta wing design, semi-conical Oswatitsch-type air intakes, and general configuration.
The first flight of the Mirage 4000 was on March 9, 1979. The development was financed by Dassault as a private venture. The Mirage 4000 is comparable in size to the United States F-15 Eagle and was designed to serve as both a long-range interceptor and a fighter-bomber.
However, the program ended in the early 1980s when the Royal Saudi Air Force ordered a large number of Panavia Tornado aircraft. The French Air Force focused on the Mirage 2000, leaving Dassault without customers. Iran was also lost as a potential customer due to the coup against the Shah in 1979. Nonetheless, the expertise gained from developing the Mirage 4000 would later influence the creation of the Dassault Rafale.
The Mirage 4000 prototype made a total of 336 flights, with its final flight taking place on January 8, 1988. The only prototype is currently displayed at the Musée de l'air et de l'espace (Paris Air and Space Museum) since November 1992.
