When it comes to your credit report, medical debt is depressing. Something awful happens to you or your family member, then you have to deal with a massive bill. If you can’t, it’ll go to collections, and your credit gets trashed.
In this video, I explain 4 ways you can remove medical debts from your credit report. Two are good, two aren’t so good. I also have accompanying numbers from users of Novita to show you how successful other people have been with each of these methods.
HIPAA Method. 7/23 were successful - 30% success rate.
The first way is to contact the collections company and ask for validation of the debt. Sometimes the collections company makes a mistake, and they end up violating HIPAA. These violations are expensive, and you have every right to sue them, so they’ll drop the item from your credit report.
Standard disputes. 0/12 were successful - 0% success rate.
The second way is to just dispute the medical debt straight up. This is what some credit repair companies try to do, and it never worked for my users. Not to say it won’t work at all, but in our data, no luck.
Pay collections. 8/8 were successful - 100% success rate.
The third way is to pay collections, then dispute the item from your credit report. Once the collection is paid, there’s nothing to report, and it’s dead easy to get the item removed from your credit report. The downside? You need to actually pay, and it can take a while to come up with the money.
Do nothing. 0/0 were successful
You can always just wait for the collection to age out of your credit report but, you know, that takes a while :).
