J. S. Bach’s Aria Schafe können sicher weiden from the Hunting Cantata BWV 208 is one of the pieces I’ve always wanted to record. Luckily for me, Kohei Minami made a wonderful arrangement of that masterpiece. The character of the music somehow suits perfectly the post-Christmas and pre–New Year's Eve melancholy.
The cantata, known also as the Birthday Cantata, was written in 1713 for the birthday of Duke Christian, who was a keen hunter. It is Bach's earliest surviving secular cantata.
Sheep can safely graze
where a good shepherd watches over them.
Where rulers are ruling well,
we may feel peace and rest
and what makes countries happy.
