▪️ Clarithromycin belongs to a drug class called macrolides. They are used to treat a wide range of infections caused by gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Macrolides are considered broad spectrum antibiotics, as they’re active against most gram-positive bacteria.
▪️ Clarithromycin targets the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit in order to inhibit protein synthesis. This drug bind irreversibly to a site on the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, thus inhibiting translocation steps of protein synthesis. They may also interfere with other steps, such as transpeptidation. As a result, clarithromycin has a bacteriostatic effect, meaning it stops bacterial growth.
▪️ Common indications of clarithromycin include. Upper respiratory tract infection. Such as community acquired pneumonia. Lyme disease. H pylori infection And Mycobacterial infections.
▪️ Common side effects include, Headache. Skin rash. QT interval prolongation. Gastrointestinal disturbances like diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Clarithromycin can also cause abnormal taste, and pancreatitis. . This drug is contraindicated in patients with the history of cholestasis jaundice, or hepatic dysfunction with prior use of drug.
