Another wonderful experience here in New Zealand .
We’ve decided to do Tongariro Alpine Crossing in winter (July 19th 2020 ) and we had no idea what to expect.
•No shuttle during Winter
•highly recommending to leave your car on Mangatepopo car park (no limited time in winter )
•as there is no shuttle - you practically can’t finish Tongariro because you finish on the opposite end therefore you cannot get to your car .
• best thing you can do is to go to Red Crater ( you will see the lakes too ) and go back the same way - you will enjoy it don’t worry ;)
•Guide -there is no need for one
•Equipment - you will need water proof hiking shoes (YES YOU WILL )
Crampons - well you don’t need them ( we didn’t have them ) but the end is quite steep and slippery so it’s not a bad thing if you have them
The whole trip for us :
•It took us 6 hours in total ( with snack breaks and taking photos haha)
•Make sure you check the weather- we had absolutely stunning weather
