Exploring the Mysterious Hub Dam in Karachi, Pakistan Urdu Documentary (2024) | حب ڈیم کراچی کی تاریخ
The planning for the Hub Dam, located just 41 kilometers from Karachi on the border between Sindh and Balochistan, began in 1960 by WAPDA. Actual construction started in September 1963. After 18 years of hard work and dedication, the impressive dam was completed in June 1981, showcasing both a technical achievement and a testament to hard work.
The Hub Dam has not only won hearts with its beauty but has also played a crucial role in water supply. It provides 63% of its water to Sindh, meeting the needs of both Karachi's industrial and residential areas. Similarly, Balochistan receives 37% of the water from the dam, which irrigates the lands in the Lasbela district, making them lush and green. The completion of this major project cost 1.2 billion rupees.
The dam built on the Hub River is named after the nearby industrial city of Hub in Balochistan. The Hub Dam has a storage capacity of 857,000 acre-feet and supplies Karachi with 100 million gallons of water daily. This impressive dam is situated 352 feet above sea level, with the water level in the dam at 339 feet.
In 1974, the Sindh government designated the area around the Hub Dam as a wildlife sanctuary. This sanctuary covers about 27,219 hectares and provides an ideal environment for various bird species due to its natural beauty and peaceful surroundings.
On weekends, many people from Karachi head to the Hub Dam to enjoy picnics, swimming, and fishing. There is also a beautiful WAPDA rest house for visitors, where tourists can stay comfortably.
