A new program at the Colleton County School District will help increase access to quality health care for more than a thousand, according to school district officials.

On Thursday, the district announced a new school-based telehealth initiative with the Medical University of South Carolina that will allow the school nurse to connect with doctors at MUSC through live video. Students will go to the school nurse at Colleton County Middle School, where the nurse will be able to start a video conference with a provider in Charleston.

"For a number of students, the only resort was the emergency room," said Dr. Jacinta Bryant, the district's director of special services. "So we needed to find a way where parents felt: I can still send my child to school and I find out what's going on."

Superintendent Dr. Franklin Foster says the program will start out at the middle school in Walterboro, with the goal of expanding it to the high school and elementary schools in the future.
