From the Well-Tempered Clavier (Book 1)
Recorded on a piano roll in 1925
Ethel Leginska (1886 – 1970) was born in Hull, England. After making her London debut aged 10, she studied in Frankfurt and later in Vienna. She toured Europe and the US as a concert pianist. She then became a conductor at a time when women conductors were a rarity. In the late 1920s, she founded her own women's orchestra. Also a composer, in 1935 she became the first woman to conduct her own opera in a major opera house. In 1939 she settled in LA, becoming a piano teacher.
