On 29th, June 2022. Editorial CDs group Ibadan North 1 visited Irefin palace which is said to be built for over 100 years. Corps members start getting to the venue (irefin palace) around 9:00 am and the program commenced at exactly 10:00 am.
Mr. Remi irefin previously the Ibadan North-East chairman which been one of the elders of irefin palace and welcomed the corps members to irefin palace and also charged the corps members to pay attention as he started to tell the history of irefin palace.
Irefin palace is an ancient palace that has been built for over 100 years, was built with mud and timber wood, and yet still stands strong on the soil of Ibadan city today
The Irefin clans were warriors in the days of old who settled in the Ibadan area known then as a resting settlement for travelers. The palace was the abode of a powerful chief in the Ibadan enclave, called “Ba’ale Irefin”, who ruled from 1912-1914.
Those years were full of war and strives. Only the strong can reign in Ibadan with a title for long. Traditional strengths were required. Their grandfather was said to not have reigned for long due to stronger powers. His friend was called Captain Royce betrayed him and accused him of treating Chiefs badly. A petition was written against the residents about a conspiracy against Alaafin of Oyo, the letter was signed by other strong leaders before tendering the letter, and in the end, then arrest was made, they denied knowing anything about the letter even after a series of questioning. They confessed that the leaders forced them to sign. Baale Irefin was deposed and he returned to his village now known as Egbeda. Attempts were made to regain the position but all attempts and efforts were futile.
Another baale was appointed after a 6months interval on Oct. 14th, 1914 after Irefin was deposed and he eventually returned to Ibadan. When he came back to Ibadan, he asked for a grave to be dug for him and he stretched himself in it to make sure it was his perfect size. He gave instructions that no one should weep when he dies. He went to his bed and died.
After the death, Balogun Oke-are, Shittu took over the throne and ordered the chiefs not to visit Irefin Palace not knowing Baale had given instructions not to be mourned. Baale was a tall, huge, rich, and handsome man.
Late Oba Onirefin was noted for his philanthropic efforts, especially in the promotion of education he donated 200pounds to Ibadan Grammar School in 1913 and as a result of this, a hall was constructed in memory of him and named Irefin House.
Baale was illiterate and he didn't use his father's name. His full name is Ogundeyi Irefin. His father is Ogunlade, a blacksmith. He manufactured the best Dane (double-barrelled shotgun).
The family held the historical significance of being the descendants of Oba Onirefin who built the biggest palace of 125 rooms in the history of Yorubaland, during his reign between 1912 to 1914. Among the numerous rooms in the palace are the clan’s ‘spiritual powerhouse’ and the judgment room where misunderstandings within the clan are resolved or punishment meted out to the iniquitous.
Mr. Remi irefin crowned his words by giving moral advice to corps members: Education without morality is like tea without sugar.
He also encouraged everyone to take care of their parents. Do not neglect your parents were his words.
Finally, he encouraged corps members to marry themselves and never neglect the ancient things and value them despite we are in the world of civilization.
Question and answers were entertained
A tour around the palace
First floor: Visit the graveside, Olori rooms, Igbejo (court)
The second floor: Iyẹwu Oba (private chambers), Pepe Oke, newest wife room.
Third floor: this is a place where “Ba’ale Irefin” can see things that happen in Ibadan and whenever thieves wanted to come he can see them ahead before they get to him which always makes him defeat them.
We thereafter interviewed another indigene of Irefin palace, Mutiu Ogundeji, who also explained that the palace has been used by movie producers to shoot movies like Saworoide, Eyin Ayé, Sango, etc.
After all, attendance was written batch by batch and everyone departed to their various destination.
