Abstract: Geographic Information Systems have facilitated the interpretation of spatial data by revealing relationships, trends and other patterns with visualization techniques like maps. This representation will help us understand better the information we have and guide us to a better solution of our problem there by enhancing our decision making. This type of system provide support to all industries, it helps private companies identify their needs and the best approach to make their business, and for governments it provides accurate information about their terrain and their citizens, just to mention some functionality. The technological architecture of a Smart City can be seen as a GIS with spatial data from multiple sources with high degree of accuracy. Spatial Data is needed in Smart City to improve the management and governance of the local government. The real-time measurement of a city variables is needed to assure the quality of life of the citizens. It can also work as a tool of empowerment and transparency.
The PUCMM is involved in deploying a network of sensors to measure the noise pollution and air quality in Santo Domingo. The measurements of these variables will be represented in a interactive map of the city showing real-time values of the measurements and a prediction model. The project allows the local government to measure the effect of its politics and for the proper location of new places to be built.
