The Murtoa Stick Shed is located in Murtoa, Victoria, Australia, is a historic and iconic structure built during World War II. Officially known as the Murtoa No. 1 Grain Store, it was constructed in 1941 as an emergency grain storage facility.
What an amazing structure and massive. The shed used over 560 unmilled mountain ash poles, hence the name “Stickshed”. It measures 270m in length, 60m width and is 19m high. It took 4 to 5 months to construct, which I personally consider an amazing feat.
It was a quick solution for wheat storage. At the time wheat couldn't be exported due to war blockades. There were 22 of these built in Australia at the time but this one is the only one remaining. Not only does it represent an important part of Australia's agricultural and wartime history, it shows just how ingenious and resourceful they were in that era.
The Stickshed was listed on the Victorian Heritage Register in 1990, and subsequently in 2014, it was added to the National Heritage List as recognition of its national significance.
Overall, the Murtoa Stick Shed stands as a remarkable example of emergency architecture, a testament to the agricultural history of Australia, and a symbol of resilience during challenging times.
It is definitely worth a visit if you are travelling through Murtoa.
