In this video, Norton expert Paul Gray explains why cutting discs should never be used for grinding. As Paul points out, cutting discs are usually very thin and contain only one layer of safety reinforcement inside the disc which means if they're used incorrectly under pressure for grinding, they can snap or explode on the angle grinder and be very dangerous.
It is possible, however to cut with a grinding disc. It will take longer but due to the additional reinforcements and thicker nature of the disc, it is generally safe to do so. It's always advisable to use a disc designed for the job you're doing and the material you're working on.
