STORYLINE:
Security forces trying to rescue six engineers kidnapped by rebels in Indonesia's Aceh province have clashed with the insurgents, leaving three people dead, the military said.
An armed forces spokesman said a soldier and two rebels were killed in the gun battle on Friday in eastern Aceh.
The military was unsuccessful in freeing the hostages.
The rebels attacked the freighter, Honduras-registered 'Ocean Silver', last Saturday as it was passing through the Straits of Mallacca, a busy shipping lane between Sumatra Island and Malaysia.
The guerrillas led six of the 12 Indonesian crewman at gunpoint onto their speedboat.
Unidentified gunmen have also killed a local legislator in Indonesia's Aceh province, while aid workers found 11 bodies, according to police and volunteers.
Zaini Sulaiman, a member of Aceh's provincial council, was shot dead on Saturday outside his house in the provincial capital Banda Aceh, said a police spokesman.
Officers suspect that separatist rebels were behind the assassination, although a spokesman for the insurgents denied any involvement in the killing.
Indonesian Red Cross officials said they found 11 bodies in different locations in the province on the northern tip of Sumatra Island on Friday and Saturday.
All were believed to be the victims of separatist violence.
The latest deaths came after Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri delayed her trip to Aceh's provincial capital, Banda Aceh.
She had been expected to hold peace talks with separatist leaders in an attempt to end the conflict which has left more than 1-thousand dead this year.
The Free Aceh Movement has been fighting since 1975 for independence for the gas and oil-rich region on the northern tip of Sumatra, about 1,750 kilometres (1,100 miles) northwest of Jakarta.
More than 6-thousand people, most of them civilians, have been killed in the past decade in the region.
