Originally found in north west Vietnam and described in 2003, Dendrobium trantuanii is a wonderfully unique species. The flowers are a weird combination of pink and green with a deep red/brown lip covered in hairs.
This orchid has been in my collection now for two and a half years and has been growing well alongside my Den. section Dendrobium collection in a west facing window.
Although it comes from lower elevations (800 to 1000m) indicating it might prefer warmer growing conditions it grows happily at intermediate and does not seem to mind the winter rest that it gets. Looking further into it many websites note this species as tolerant of cool temps.
The flowers open small but expand quite a bit over the next few days. They are thick and waxy in texture and last for a couple of weeks.
