As healthcare becomes seduced by shiny-new generative AI, what happens to the policy and regulatory work that we still haven’t finished to help scale “standard, traditional AI” in our industry? Leave it to an AI Policy Advisor to keep us on-task! Rachel Dunscombe, who does such consulting in the UK, is the CEO of OpenEHR, and Visiting Professor at Imperial College London, drops in at MedInfo23 in Sydney to ask such pointed questions and also give us some insight on what else is needed from a governance infrastructure standpoint to allow for safe, clinical adoption of AI at-scale.

As Rachel puts it, we’ve already created “frictions” for adoption of AI and need to standardize and create frameworks to get us out of it and to get us ready for what’s ahead as generative AI starts to make in-roads into healthcare applications. At the top of her mind there? Transparency on two fronts: first, in “food labelling” type standards that let us know “what the algorithm ate” so to speak so we can understand and trace back what it was trained on, and, second and more importantly, transparency for patients. “Citizens need absolute transparency in how their data is used. That is just a basic human right. Our data is part of us.”

So, how do we move forward with working on both ‘good ole AI’ frameworks and ‘sexy-new generative AI’ frameworks? Can this really be done in tandem? What questions should we be asking?
