Talks between the Philippines and Japan on a Visiting Forces Agreement, named the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA), are underway. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida met in Tokyo and agreed to increase security cooperation between the two nations. The guidelines for the RAA have been agreed upon, and MaxDefense Philippines predicts that the agreement will be signed within the year. Japan already has a similar agreement in place with Australia, signed in 2022, allowing Japanese troops to visit Australia for exercises, port calls, and reciprocal visits. This new agreement with the Philippines is expected to further strengthen the security ties between the two nations.
