GERMANY: According to a preliminary estimate from the European Union's Joint Research Center, Europe is facing its worst drought in at least 500 years, with hot and dry weather sparking wildfires, lowering food yields, and cutting energy supply.
According to the European Drought Observatory, 47% of Europe is in warning mode, with an evident lack of soil moisture, while 17% of the continent is alert, with vegetation affected.
This summer's record-breaking temperatures in Europe have hampered transportation, displaced thousands, and resulted in hundreds of heat-related fatalities. The heat has also fueled wildfires, which have been more catastrophic in recent years.
