Wildflower glades are beautiful and fascinating features of the Ozark landscape, but their location and composition are strongly affected by the underlying geology. Here we explore how geologic factors affect glades at Ha Ha Tonka State Park, one of Missouri's most popular parks.
Beyond basic factors like slope and aspect, we discuss how specific bedrock formations affect glade formation, and how an ancient fault running across the landscape creates an unusual repeating-glade effect. We also share some highlights of interesting plants and insects found in Ha Ha Tonka's glades. Finally, we provide suggestions for five locations along the park's trails where you can visit and enjoy glades.
