WACO, TEXAS — North Texas-based restaurant chain Twin Peaks has revoked the franchise status of its Waco location after the restaurant turned into a warzone between rival biker gangs on Sunday, leaving nine people dead.
"We are in the people business and the safety of the employees and guests in our restaurants is priority one," Twin Peaks said in a statement. "Unfortunately the management team of the franchised restaurant in Waco chose to ignore the warnings and advice from both the police and our company, and did not uphold the high security standards we have in place to ensure everyone is safe at our restaurants."
The Twin Peaks restaurant in Waco is owned by Chalak Mitra Group, which also owns the Genghis Grill chain, two of the fast-growing restaurant chains in the U.S., according to the Dallas Morning News.
Chalak Mitra Group is owned by Al Bhakta, Chet Bhakta, Nik Bhakta, Manish Patel and Ron Parikh. The five met in college at the University of Texas at Dallas, according to their LinkedIn profiles. Chalak Mitra runs dozens of bars and restaurants, which are expected to bring in $500 million in revenue this year.
Waco police Sergeant Patrick Swanton said in a press conference broadcast on CNN that police had warned the restaurant's owner there would likely be trouble at the biker gang event and offered to help with security. He said the offer had been ignored.
"What happened could have been avoided if we would have had management at a local establishment listen to their police department and assist us," Swanton said.
