1. Fletcher Pack, 3, gets first COVID-19 vaccine shot as his mother, McKenzie Pack, comforts him
STORYLINE:
Fletcher Pack woke up Monday morning and asked: "Is today vaccine day?"
For the 3-year-old from Lexington, South Carolina _ and some other U.S. children under 5 seeking COVID-19 shots _ the answer was yes.
His mother McKenzie Pack said that once Fletcher is fully vaccinated, he can finally go bowling and visit the nearby children's museum.
The nation's infants, toddlers and preschoolers at last have their chance at vaccination as the U.S. rolls out shots for tots this week.
Shipments arrived in some locations over the weekend and some spots, including Walgreen's pharmacies in Lexington, South Carolina and New York City, began opening up appointments for Monday.
The Food and Drug Administration green-lit Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech shots for kids under 5 on Friday.
On Saturday, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recommended them for children from ages 6 months to 5 years after a thumbs-up from the agency's vaccine advisers.
The Biden administration had preordered millions of doses in anticipation.
Many parents have been anxiously awaiting the rollout since the vaccination program began about 1 1/2 years ago with adults.
Roughly 18 million children will be eligible, but it remains to be seen how many will ultimately get the vaccines.
Less than a third of children aged 5 to 11 have done so since vaccination opened up to them last November.
