What is violent extremism? How is it distinct from terrorism? What is countering violent extremism (CVE) described as a "soft approach"?
Dr. Brendon Kendhammer maps out what we know about violent extremism, why it exists, and what kind of efforts work to counter it.
"The theory behind CVE," he explains, "is that if violent extremism is caused by the vulnerabilities of communities to VE groups and their ideology, then we need to figure out what those vulnerabilities are … and think about what kind of mobilization—whether through security services or social mobilization activities of governments or NGOs—would work to counter those factors."
