Montenegro also called the country of the black mountains, lies on the southeastern Adriatic Sea between Croatia and Albania. The country has been independent and sovereign of Serbia since 2006. Montenegro is barely 14,000 square kilometres in size and sparsely populated. It boasts a diverse natural landscape full of contrasts, a coastline full of bays with extensive wetlands, crystal-clear glacial lakes, karstic peaks and deep gorges. Many of Montenegro's natural treasures are unique and breathtaking, making them protected as a national park or "natural heritage of mankind".
