Anxiety disorders are so common that perhaps 5-10% of all people suffer from relatively severe anxiety disorders, and about 25% of us will develop even more severe disorders of this nature in the longer run. Mainly these disorders will manifest as social phobia or social anxiety, situations in which those suffering may find it hard to impossible to meet and interact with new people, successfully go through a job interview, attracting any kind of attention and other social situations.
These disorders may prove to be debilitating for everyday life, and make meeting people for any kind of relationship, friendship or professional advancement nearly impossible for some. Another form of this is panic disorder, which manifests in panic attacks. Shortage of breath, a racing heart rate, shaking, feeling hot and cold, feeling like you're "about to die" as some have described, and other symptoms, may be experienced by those suffering panic attacks, a situation that becomes increasingly hard when these attacks occur several times a week with some patients.
Many find it harder to leave their homes under these circumstances. Some anxiety disorders manifest in a constant worry, with people worrying about everything in their daily routine. OCD, obsessive compulsive disorder, is another form of anxiety disorder, in which people feel they must repeat things in their heads to avoid "bad things" from happening, touching items in a numbered, ritual way, driven by a sense something bad might happen if they don't follow this exact routine repeatedly.
Many patients find they suffer from combined symptoms of both anxiety and depression, and find treatment in the form of dual action SSRI meds, which increase serotonin levels, but often prove less useful in the longer run, and many have a sedating effect which makes working harder, and some might be addictive. These meds may take two weeks to start showing their benefits, with many patients needing a temporary treatment, and other needing a longer term treatment or suffering from later recurring attacks.
Anxiety and OCD disorder patients can benefit from another form of effective treatment many find extremely beneficial, which is the combination of TMS (Transcranial magnetic stimulation) in the anxiety treatment process, which can also assists those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
