Many have asked John Crowder to weigh in on mimetic theory - the philosophical work of René Girard that is now popular in some grace-oriented theological circles. In this video, John extols the benefit of MT for helping grasp the nonviolent nature of God and our misconceptions about penal substitution (that Jesus died to avert God's anger toward us).
While John does not claim to give an exhaustive overview of mimetic theory, he does caution against the tendency of some (not all) extreme elements in the MT camp who limit the work of cross to merely a model of ethics and nonviolence, while ignoring the deeper, mystical transformation that takes place in humanity. On a foundational level, the cross eradicates the endemic problem of sin itself and plugs us into a vital union with Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
