Parallel Session 57, Bio-based concepts inspiring the spatial structures and architecture of the next generation (WG 12)
Dana Saez, Denis Grizmann and Martin Trautz (Technical University of Dresden; Aachen University & Trag Konstruktionen) present their work on mycelium-based construction elements.
The project “MycoMatrix, new products for the bio-economy” aims to produce mycelium-based construction elements with both structurally and physically valuable properties. It attempts to establish a more holistic understanding of the different influencing factors on the structural material properties of fungal mycelium. Although MycoMatrix presents many advantages, its low strength has encouraged our research team to improve its load-bearing capacity. The use of wood chips as a substrate allows a higher density of the mycelium- based material, which positively influences its load-bearing capacity. Our findings have indicated that the choice and geometry of the substrate and fungi selection positively influence the material properties of the mycelium- based material. Therefore, we decided to further develop it by increasing the number of influencing variables. The results provide a deeper understanding of the new material and classify it within the range of conventional building materials.
