This leather design started out as a pencil drawing and then it was transferred to the wet leather that had been cased and next the design was cut in with a swivel knife.

The leather parts being tooled and carved here go on a custom made saddle and require a mirror image on the off side of the saddle by that I mean the tooling has to be transferred so it matches from one side to the other.

The video before this one shows a pencil drawing of the Oak Leaf and Acorn design that was traced onto the wet leather. It is very important that the leather is cased and prepped to receive the image so it can be transferred using a polished tip saddlers awl
by tracing the pencil sketch onto the prepared leather.
Once the pattern has been traced onto the leather it is time to cut in the design using a swivel knife, the one I use is made by Barry King Tools, Sheridan, Wyoming.
This leather carving tutorial shows how to transfer the "Pencil Drawing" leather design onto Hermann Oak saddle skirting that is 13/15 oz. in thickness which is around a quarter of an inch thick.
You can make a dedicated leather tap off pattern for Guitar Straps, Hand Made Purses, Billfolds and Belts and what ever else you make especially if you tool and carve the same kind of pattern over and over.
