In this quick video, we will look at a brief history and evolution of refrigerators. Before the invention of the refrigerator, ice houses were used to provide cool storage for most of the year. Placed near freshwater lakes or packed with snow and ice during the winter, they were once very common. The Greek and Roman civilizations transported a large amount of snow and ice from the mountains, put it into storage pits and covered it with insulating material.

History of the refrigerator timeline

1841 - Dr. John Gorrie mechanical ice machine.
The ice boxes were introduced in the 1800s, as a way of keeping food and drinks cool and fresh. They were made of wood with an interior lined with tin or cork. The ice boxes were similar to modern refrigerators, only instead of generating their own cold air, they used a big ice block.

Jan 1, 1925 - Wooden Ice box.
The first refrigerator. It is made of wood and is quit simple. Ice is stored in the box with food to keep it cold.

1935 - Metal Ice box.
They were often galvanized to prevent rust. Metal ice boxes were also used for the ice man, who would go house to house delivering ice.

1927 - First Electric Refrigerator.
Fort Wayne, Indiana, an General Electric Company produced the first electric home refrigerator. They were quite expensive, Costs around $1000, nearly twice as much as an automobile at that time.

1990 - CFC Refrigerators.
A slightly more modern refrigerator. They used chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) as a refrigerant. This substance is a ozone-depleting substance.

2010 - Modern refrigerators.
Modern refrigerators do not use CFC instead they use tetrafluoroethane or HFC. HFC does not destroy the environment like CFC or any other gas like it.
