In addition to the figure eight loop, clove hitch and Munter hitch, the Prusik knot is one of the knots you must be able to tie on a high alpine tour. It serves as a friction hitch knot for crevasse rescues, either as a climbing aid for self-rescue or as a reverse lock with a pulley system.
