Description:
Over the course of humanity’s existence, there have been major contributions that have influenced the progression of our society. Indeed, inventions have shaped us and have helped us grow into the world around us. We can’t even fathom what life was life before the internet, or how people communicated with each other before the telephone was invented, let alone the smartphone and social media. Inventions in the last few decades are very tech heavy to the point where the amount of lives lost is minimal. But if you go back to the time of the Industrial Revolution and earlier, people right and left were dying while in the midst of testing out their inventions.
For example, William Bullock, who basically took Gutenberg’s printing press and made it so it could be run by itself, was killed by his own invention. Like many injuries in the Industrial Revolution, Bullock got his leg stuck in the press and it got crushed. Before he could heal, the crushed leg developed a gangrene infection. While in surgery to remove the infected leg, the gangrene had already spread to the rest of Bullock’s body and he died.
There is nothing more ironic and tragic than to hear of an inventor who lost their life from their own invention. Would you call that a form of suicide? Probably not. Even if it was their own brilliancy that developed their own murder weapon. Think about it, do you think the automobile had perfect test runs? On the contrary, we still get into auto accidents today that kill us, and that’s with the latest innovations of technology. Think about the time when the car was just being tested out. After Henry Ford put out his car, others were scrambling to produce copycats, but made with different parts. Francis Stanley, who with his twin brother, invented the Stanley Steamer car, died while out on a drive in the car that he invented. He took a sharp curve to avoid something on the road, overturned his car, and died in the accident.
Or take a moment and imagine that you’re on the maiden voyage of the Titanic, and you’re sitting at the same table as Thomas Andrews, the shipbuilder who designed the ill-fated ship. Now, imagine that he’s handing you a lifejacket and helping you into your lifeboat. Andrews was seen helping people, as well as in the smoking room before the ship sank. One can imagine the sadness and failure he must have felt as the ship he designed was unable to withstand the impact of an iceberg, let alone turn fast enough to avoid it.
Finally, we have Max Valier, a real “rocket man” of his time. His ultimate goal was to figure out a way to go into space, and in the meantime, managed to integrate rockets into cars. He got the brilliant idea to use liquid fuel, but unfortunately died when one of the rockets with said fuel exploded.
These are but a few of the brilliant inventors who died from their own creations. Check out the rest of the video to learn more about these unfortunate incidents.
