European Council President Herman van Rompuy on Monday issued a video statement, recorded as an interview in the institution's TV studio, in which he addressed the debate that's going on over how decisions need to be made in the European Union. One side argues that EU decisions need to be made on the basis of the 'Community Method", where the EU institutions are in the lead, against the "Interngovernmental Method", where the member states are in charge.
"The choice is between a coordinated European decision, or no decision at all," he said. "Europe is built on pragmatism. Those who ask too much, end up with nothing."
His video statement follows a major clash last week between the parliament and the Commission and between EU member states over the French plans for Roma expulsions. This plan triggered a vehement response from the European Commission, acting as guardian of the European Treaties.
