Gloria Steinem talks about the politics of maternal mortality for the Half the Sky movement. Steinem is a writer, lecturer, editor, and feminist activist. She travels across the United States and abroad as an organizer and lecturer and is a frequent media spokeswoman on issues of equality. She is particularly interested in the shared origins of sex and race caste systems, gender roles and child abuse as roots of violence, non-violent conflict resolution, the cultures of indigenous peoples, and organizing across boundaries for peace and justice.

"What worries me about me about the movement against maternal mortality, you know, which of course, one fully supports, but sometimes fails to mention the politics of it, the degree to which women are dying because of child marriage, that fistulas are due to, in large part, to both child marriage and infibulation and FGM, you know, it's not just lack of a doctor, it's politics, it's the control of women's bodies as nothing but the means of production."
