Maui combines Polynesian heritage with a modern American lifestyle. The "Valley Isle" is the second-largest island in Hawaii, but it only takes a few hours to drive from the east to the west coast. However, the best way to enjoy Maui's breathtaking natural beauty is by undertaking a leisurely road trip around the island.
Wailuki is the island's capital. From here, the winding Road to Hana offers dramatic, lush scenery, the Garden of Eden Arboretum, and the surfing and fishing opportunities at Ho'Okipa Beach Park on the east coast.
The highest point of the island is found in Haleakala National Park, where cinder cones stick out from the moon-like landscape: A hiker's paradise.
Maui's west coast beaches, such as Big Beach, in Makena Beach State Park, and Kihei are great for surfing and sunbathing. Offshore, Molokini Island is a snorkeling destination. Cruise boats pause for turtle, dolphin and whale sightings along the way. Back on Maui, Turtle Town (Maluaka Beach) offers a chance to snorkel with turtles.
In the northwest, historic Lahaina has galleries, markets and museums. The upscale resort at Kaanpali Beach is a good place to enjoy the luxuries of this island paradise before driving back to Wailuki.
