The SSL channel strip is often used in a particular way, especially with vocals.
This method allows the vocals to stand out in the song.
But, I’ve found it’s also really useful for mastering a whole mix.
One key reason for this is the ‘punchiness’ it brings to the sound - it can make a mix really pop!
It’s also a change from the usual SSL G Series glue style compression.
Overall, it gives a different feel, which is great for those who like to try new things and play around with different sounds and techniques.
These are the settings you need as a starting point:
1. SSL E Series Compressor (loads of different plugin makes do it)
2. Set release to 0.4
3. Set threshold to -20
4. Bring the ratio up until it’s flashing with -6
