For centuries, Scotland’s rivers have been straightened, confined and tidied, but today, rivers are being rewiggled, deadwood is being reintroduced and artificial barriers are being removed, returning rivers to their natural meandering course, diversifying flows and restoring connectivity for migratory fish like salmon, all the way from source to sea. The Riverwoods Initiative is championing this change, and even King Charles is on board, with
the royal estate at Balmoral pioneering the use of deadwood to revitalise the headwaters of the River Dee.
