In this video, we’ll be looking at Colossians 4:7-18. This passage today closes out Paul’s letter to the Colossians. Paul had fulfilled the purpose of his letter. He had shown that Jesus Christ is above all, supreme, and in Him alone could we find completeness. In Jesus, we have new life, and Paul describes what living that new life means. And now Paul wraps things up. It was the custom during Paul’s time to put the greetings at the end of the letter, and he does so here.
Often when it comes to these greetings, we read them, or really just skim over them. All sorts of names and descriptions about these people. It might be hard for us to find something worthwhile in these kinds of passages. But as Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 3: “All Scripture is inspired by God, profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” This passage too belongs to the word of God, and it has something to teach us.
Colossians 4:7-18 teaches us that the new life that we have in Jesus binds us as believers together in a community that transcends place.
