I found a way to apply edible gold leaf to a frosted cake for a glamorous special occasion cake WITHOUT using fondant.

About Edible Gold:
You want to buy edible gold on transfer sheets - NOT loose leaf. You absolutely need the transfer sheets for this process to work. Make sure your edible gold IS edible and safe for consumption, not just decor. It should be 24 karat pure gold, which passes through your system without being absorbed. It also has not taste or texture. It's purely for looks. Yes, edible gold is more expensive than, say, sprinkles BUT this entire cake can be baked and covered with edible gold for less than $25 (assuming you have a baker's pantry stocked!), which is far less than it would cost to buy a cake from a bakery.

About this Cake
This is my fiori di sicilia (orange vanilla) cake that I baked in three 8" layers and then sliced in half for six layers. I spread my honey frosting thinly on each slice for a grand total of twelve layers, one for each of the twelve labors of Hercules. I served this cake at Disney Dinners: Hercules.
