Russia's military commander in Chechnya on Sunday (18/6) ordered
his troops to stop all military operations in the separatist
region from 8 p.m. (1600 GMT), Itar-Tass news agency said. Meanwhile, Chechen militant leader, Shamil Basayev, reportedly wants to take more than 100 captives with him to Chechnya as a safety guarantee. Human rights commissioner, Sergei Kovalyov, who has been negotiating with Chechen gunmen in Budennovsk says he can guarentee the safety of those who go with the gunmen into Chechnya on Tuesday. Many described conditions at the hospital in this southern Russian town as "grim".
