Federico Mompou was a Spanish/Catalan composer who was born in Barcelona and lived from 1893 to 1987. He is best known for his many piano pieces and some songs.
Mompou wrote a total of 15 pieces that he called Cancion y Danza over his lifetime. All are for piano solo except for No. 13 which is for guitar and No. 15 which is for organ.
Some of the melodies used in the songs and dances are original, but many are borrowed from folk songs or other sources.
Cancion y Danza No. 6 is dedicated to the pianist Arthur Rubinstein and is based on original themes. It uses rhythms common to Cuban, Argentinian and Brazilian music.
