In 2008 Timothy Ray Brown, an HIV-positive leukemia patient, was given a stem cell transplant to treat his cancer. The stem cell donor had a rare mutation that grants immunity to HIV, and after the transplant levels of HIV in Timothy's body plummeted, soon becoming entirely undetectable. Today he is considered cured of HIV.
