Lights out...and the stars appear" is a documentary from 1972, produced by the British "Group 9.5", an interest group for the analogue film format 9.5mm, with the special commitment of John Burgoyne-Johnson and Gordon Clarke and commented by Michael Bentine. This film was made in honour of the 50th anniversary of the film format and traces its history.
If you look at this heartfelt ode to a lost film format, you can draw some astonishing parallels to the current Super 8 scene: the unconditional love for a long outdated film format and the struggle for its continued existence.
Introduced by Pathé in France in 1922, 9.5mm can definitely be considered the first home cinema format, even if its price and availability naturally make it more of a geek and specialist medium, incomparable to the status of a genuine mass medium that Super 8 enjoyed in the 1970s.
