DWIGHT: Dementia is a syndrome that includes losing cognitive functions such as thinking, remembering, and reasoning. Dementia can interfere with people’s daily lives. When people have difficulties with memory, critical thinking, problem solving, attentional span, or self-care, this can interfere with their daily functions and activities. Their personalities may change; they may not be able to control their emotions. Dementia can range from mild to severe. There are many kinds of dementias. A neuropsychologist can help evaluate the level of severity and recommend strategies to deal with the functional changes that are impacted by dementia. People often believe that dementia is just a part of life where everyone would eventually experience. This is not true.
