The art of splicing different genetic strains is almost like creating a GMO. And thats why grafting is such a fun, scientific activity (perfected more than 4000 years ago.)
But we are going a bit further with it. We are experimenting with ‘interstem grafting’ where three different genetic strains will be grafted together to form an apple tree that’ll bear characteristics of each.

The M9 rootstock is grafted (as an interstem) on M111 rootstock (the root) and the scion (fruiting variety) grafted on top.
The strong roots and anchoring of the M111 combines here with the dwarfing and precocity of M9. The scion will of course bear the character of the variety that’s grafted on top.
( Because we are always in a hurry, we are experimenting grafting them all at the same time)
