In knitting, Sl1 - slip one - means passing a stitch from the left needle over to the right needle without knitting it. You can either do it point to point (purlwise) or by entering the stitch you want to join as if to knit (from right to left). The yarn can be in the back or you can also slip one with yarn in front = sl1 wyib.
These techniques can be used to reinforce sock heels, some selvage stitches and a lot of decreases use slipped stitch. Even some colorwork techniques, like mosaic or the bobble stitch make use of slip stitches.
