Many viewers asked for a longer version of the original 1950s Super Lectric fan on this channel, so here is a 9-hour video! This is a beautiful, all-metal fan with aluminum blades and a one-of-a-kind cage that perfectly embodies the "Mid-Century Modern" design aesthetic of the era. A favorite fan of many on this channel, the spinning blade has a satisfyingly soothing hum, reminiscent of a propeller in cruising flight from a 1940s or 1950s piston-powered aircraft. The company that made this fan was called Superior Electric Products Corporation, from St. Louis, Missouri. From the 1920s until the late 1960s they manufactured a variety of electrical appliances and products. This fan was designed and built in the United States at a time when America produced some of the best products in the world. Fully restored, the fan works perfectly and looks brand new. This Super Lectric fan is powerful with excellent quality of construction and no cheap, plastic parts. With proper maintenance, fans like this were built to last many, many decades and it is no surprise that this unit is still fully operational today.
All the appliances in this video work perfectly, exactly as they did in the 1950s. There is an authentic, restored, and fully functional RCA Victor AM radio. Unlike many vintage radios, RCA models had a simplistic yet flawless design that never looks dated and still holds up today. Produced before transistors and solid-state devices became commonplace, this radio runs on vacuum tubes, which were key components in electronic circuits in the early to mid 20th century. Vacuum tubes produced a lot of heat, but they also introduced mild distortion into the audio signal that made for a warm and mellow listening experience. Today, some audio companies are producing new devices that run on old vacuum tubes for this very reason. The radio is quite large and its case is made of an early form of plastic called Bakelite. To the left is a restored Western Electric 1950s black rotary desk telephone. This phone looks brand new. It can be plugged into a modern telephone jack, and...it works! You dial by putting your index finger into a numbered hole, then turn the wheel clockwise, letting go when your finger hits the metal stop. Then you dial the next number, and so on. These phones are durable, hefty and sound very good - I would say they sound better - compared to modern telephones and cell phones. Centuries from now, when people will research and look up the word “telephone,” it is this device that will most likely be referenced. This particular type of rotary phone was ubiquitous in households in North America from the 1950s until the late 1980s. Everyone had one! Also present is a model 1956 Ford F100 pick-up truck, part of the second generation of Ford's F-Series vehicles. This truck is special; its body style is unique only to 1956 and unlike previous years’ models, it had a wrap-around windshield. As you can see from the items in this and other 1950s videos on this channel, this decade was about the beauty of all things round and curvy.
