We can help species adapt to climate change. The solution? Protected places!
Birds are among the most studied animals in the world, and what they're telling us about climate change is alarming. As the climate shifts, many bird species are relocating northward or to higher elevations to escape rising temperatures.
In fact, by 2050, one in four birds in Parks Canada places may need to find new homes as a result of increased greenhouse gas emissions.
Protected and conserved areas will play a vital role in assisting species as they adapt to rising temperatures. These areas give birds and other wildlife the necessary breathing room to adapt and survive. These areas are still impacted by climate change. However, they may have fewer stressors, like habitat loss by human encroachment, resource extraction, and pollution.
Think of protected places as climate refuges and a nature-based solution to climate change.
